Anxiety disorder is the most common mental illnesses, affecting 40 million adults, or 18% of the population. Anxiety disorders are treatable, but many seek help in the form of prescription medication. What if there was a more natural way to treat anxiety? Recent research suggests that there is.  Feeling anxious is an emotion that most people experience from time to time. In someone suffering from an anxiety disorder, the feeling of anxiousness is so overwhelming that it can interfere with their ability to lead a happy life. There are several types of anxiety disorders.

– Panic Disorder, Feelings of terror that appear suddenly and repeatedly with no warning.
– Social Anxiety or social phobia, this involves an overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations.
– Specific Phobias, an intense fears about a specific object or situation, such as a fear of heights or enclosed spaces.
– Generalized Anxiety, an excessive, unrealistic worry and constant tension, even if there is nothing to provoke anxiety.

The Anti-Anxiety Vitamin
While there are several different approaches to treating anxiety, such as counseling, day spa perth relaxation therapy, and dietary and lifestyle changes, many of those suffering from anxiety disorders resort to prescription medication. Recent research, however, has shown that there just may be an important vitamin missing from the diet of those who suffer from anxiety disorders.

Niacin, or Vitamin B3 is one of the water soluble B-complex vitamins. It’s essential for DNA repair, synthesis of steroidal hormones and energy metabolism. Niacin has the ability to relax the muscle tissue composing arteries, increasing their diameter — a process called vasodilation. This leads to increased blood flow and reduces blood pressure, and also raises HDL levels while reducing LDL levels to further improve cardiovascular health. In regards to anxiety, niacin acts as an antidote to adrenaline, which is often over-produced in those suffering from anxiety.

Some researchers believe that niacin may also help to reduce anxiety and depression, while promoting better sleep patterns. According to Biochemical, Physiological and Molecular Aspects of Human Nutrition, it’s possible that niacin’s ability to increase blood flow, reduce blood pressure, eliminate excess adrenaline and regulate hormones could contribute to feelings of relaxation, aiding in eliminating stress in those who suffer from anxiety disorders.

The recommended daily intake of niacin varies according to age and gender, so consult a health care professional before taking any supplement to be sure that it’s right for you.

Ancient Japanese Secrets

It seems that following a healthy diet, exercising on a regular basis, and drinking sufficient amounts of water are the universal rules when it comes staying healthy and fit. However, every culture has its own rules and tips on how to stay healthy. For instance, the Japanese follow 4 essential rules to stay healthy. Check them out!

  1. If You Eat Like a Sumo Wrestler, You Will Look Like a Sumo Wrestler

Sumo wrestlers don’t eat breakfast as they start with their intense training right after waking up. However, they have a big lunch in the afternoon, which is followed by going to bed. They usually have two gigantic meals, two times daily. In other words, regardless of how much you exercise, if you eat a lot, you are going to gain weight. Basically, if you eat large portions or consume junk food, this will prevail over the time you work out.   Therefore, make sure you eat balanced diet, exercise regularly, and follow good sleep patterns.

  1. Warmth is Life

The food is basically an energy we consume to survive. Fruits and veggies which grow in the summer cool the body, allowing it to adjust to the summer heat. On the other hand, the foods which grow in the winter are higher in calories and keep our bodies warm during the cold, winter days. Even though raw fruits, veggies, and greens are very important when it comes to a healthy diet, the body still needs warmer foods once in a while. Therefore, you should eat a nutritious diet to supply your body with all the nutrients it needs.

  1. Avoid Drinking Liquids During Your Meal

Most Japanese don’t drink water or any other type of liquid during their meal, believing that this negatively affects digestion. The explanation behind this is that liquid cools the body and takes away the warmth of the body. According to some scientists, water neutralizes the stomach acid, which in turn forces the body to spend more energy to finish the digestion. You can supply your body with liquid through food as well, such as fruits, veggies, and soups.

  1. A Hot Bath Prolongs Your Life

A hot bath is extremely beneficial, as it improves the blood circulation, relaxes the body, and it reduces stress. Many people in Japan claim that taking a hot bath regularly improves digestion, cleanses the skin, and it prolongs life. 100-104 degrees Fahrenheit is believed to be the ideal temperature.

Americans believe that calories are the main cause of weight loss or weight gain, so most of the aforementioned ideas may seem unusual. However, if we take into consideration the World Health Organization`s report on the longest lifespan in which Japan came up on top, it seems that Japanese are doing it right.

Detox: This Is Good Fat

Our bodies need even more moisture during the colder months, and we should be eating good fats year-round. This week, celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder brings us a recipe for avocado guacamole. Not only is guacamole delicious, but the avocados it’s made from are packed full of good vitamins and antioxidants, and they’re one of the most perfect beauty fats on the planet. “First of all, fat is very important in your diet,” says Kim. “You don’t need a huge amount of it, but you do need the right kind of fats. Your brain is largely composed of fat, and avocados help you absorb your fat-soluble beauty vitamins (such as A, D, E, and K). They also help control your blood sugar levels, so you don’t experience drops in energy and start snacking on sugary foods. Avocados are also high in fiber and minerals, including potassium, copper, and iron. They’ll help make your skin look beautiful and bright, and provide plenty of moisture.”

Avocado Guacamole
  1. 2 medium avocados
  2. Juice of ½ a lemon
  3. 1 medium garlic clove, chopped very finely
  4. ¼ tsp Celtic or Himalayan sea salt
  5. Cayenne pepper, to taste
  6. 1 cup chopped tomatoes

Slice the avocados lengthwise and remove the pits. Scoop out the green avocado flesh and place in a medium-size mixing bowl. Add the lemon juice and mash the avocados with a fork. Make it as smooth as you like, or if you like your guacamole chunky, then don’t mash too much! Add the garlic, sea salt, and cayenne pepper and mix well. Add the chopped tomatoes last and mix well again. Enjoy the guacamole with veggie sticks as a filling afternoon snack. You can also serve the guacamole on top of a large salad.
